Weight Gain During Pregnancy

It is the biggest wish for a mother to live and complete a healthy process throughout pregnancy. The first requirement for this is routine medical care and a healthy diet.

Before Pregnancy

It will be better if mothers have a healthy body before pregnancy. All nutrients are important for a healthy pregnancy. However, folate or folic acid (vitamin B) is known to have special importance. Their bodies need folate to make DNA and other genetic material. During pregnancy, folate helps develop the neural tube that forms the spinal cord of babies. The neural tube begins to form immediately after getting pregnant.

Congratulations! You are having a baby

You should take care of your baby’s development and yourself during the next nine months. You can protect both your health and your baby’s health by eating healthy, being physically active and resting.

Many factors may affect the birth of a healthy baby. You cannot control the genetic characteristics of your family and your current age, but the other things are all up to you such as eating healthy, avoiding alcohol and inappropriate medicine use, quitting smoking and being under the control of a doctor.

Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Women who are well-nourished and avoiding the risks bring healthy babies. Therefore, one of the essential things that pregnant women should do is to have a healthy diet.

How Much Weight Should Be Taken During Pregnancy?

Recommendations for gaining weight are usually based on research published by the USA National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board in the 90s. These considerations generally require weight gain between 10kg and 12.5 kg depending on the pre-pregnancy weight status.

Women with a Low Weight and Baby

Most pregnant women under 47 kg have small babies than others. According to the studies, it is known that these babies are at risk of diseases such as having insulin-dependent diabetes, blood pressure, and heart disease. In addition, if you do not eat properly, your health will be at risk. For example; if you do not get enough calcium, the fetus takes this requirement from your body, and so it increases your risk for osteoporosis at a later age. Eating healthy also affects the fetus’s health directly during pregnancy. If the baby does not get enough nutrients in the mother’s womb, his/her physical and intellectual development can be affected negatively. Even if you gain weight during pregnancy, it is still very likely that the baby will be underweight just because you are thin now.

Gaining Weight Fast During Pregnancy

If you have normal weight at the beginning of your pregnancy, you, however, start to gain weight much more than 0.5 kg per week until the 4th week of pregnancy, it is useful to consult with your doctor or dietitian. The weight you take can also be due to fluid retention in your body. If you are eating a lot more than your normal diet a day, this may be the reason for your weight gain. However, if you are thin excessively before pregnancy, this weight gain can be beneficial to you.
